Do big discounts trigger sales?

Perhaps running a business gives you a different angle of reality. Not seeing the hidden part behind the lights may happen and its ok. The best truck driver also has its "angles mortes". But when I watch the movie from my seat I keep asking myself ... How does a client feels when the company that sold a product to him last week is posting NOW 50% DISCOUNT? And also... How much do you inflate the prices to cut it in half and still have profits?
